GIORGIO DI NOTO
Stratificazioni
<<Favignana consists largely of limestone rock, a type of white calcarenite that has been excavated and mined for years in the many man-made quarries. Underground caves, labyrinths and cliffs now draw an aggressive and spectacular landscape, altered by erosion and human interventions. Natural and man-made elements have thus transformed this island into a place that is at times grim, like that of a field after battle. I tried to represent this atmosphere by working on the concept of alteration and stratification, experimenting with the way in which Favignana’s material and natural elements could interfere with and relate to the photographs. Just as the land was altered by wind, sea and rock quarrying, I allowed these same elements to alter the negatives I shot throughout my residency. The limestone, sand and salt from the seawater was placed in contact with the photographic emulsion, leaving, each time in a different way, traces of a new landscape>>.
